Police: Man uses toy light saber to fend off stun gun
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police disarmed a man accused of swinging a toy light saber at customers in a toy store, assaulting at least three of them.
Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers found the man - still swinging the light saber - in the parking lot of a Toys R Us store Wednesday night at the Jantzen Beach mall. One officer tried to use a Taser but it was ineffective. A second officer made contact with his Taser but the man used his light saber to break one of the wires. Simpson says officers were finally able to wrestle the struggling man to the ground as he yelled incoherent statements.
The 33-year-old Hillsboro man, identified by police as David Allen Canterbury, was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation. Police said Canterbury received citations for three counts of assault in the fourth degree, one count of disorderly conduct in the second degree, one count of theft in the third degree, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of interfering with a police officer.
Canterbury's scheduled court date is January 11, 2012.Simpson says none of the customers required medical attention.
He also said the light saber Caterbury was allegedly swinging around was
blue.
