Every once in awhile I will see a shoe on the side of the road. Today, driving home on the Capital Beltway, it was quite a nice sandal; not some trashy homeless looking shoe that looks like someone puked on it. I often wonder, how do shoes get there? Especially when it's a single shoe like today's nice leather sandal. I have never in my life been driving (or riding) down the road and lost a shoe so far as I can recall. I did drop acid once in the 80's and ended up driving on the lawn of the Hilton Hotel while trying to find a parking spot. Which might not have been so bad had we not been in a massive, pearl-white '70's Cadillac we called "Bessie". So I guess I should not say "never" because the 80's are hazy at times.
Anyway, it occurred to me that it might be interesting to start photographing random shoes seen beside the road in their various states. Then again, trying to photograph a shoe on the side of the Capital Beltway is a good way to get yourself knocked the fuck right out of your shoes. Which might just be how it got there in the first place.
i hear ya. i was once very inspired to make a book of roadside memorials.
i would research them of course, pictures and stories. what more can you ask for?
