Add a clause that says if you need more than $50k of medical coverage in a year then you get killed. Call it the "Good Genes Clause".

Everyone with a job gets coverage by law, paid by the employer.
Our people live longer than anywhere in the USA, and our costs are the cheapest especially when you consider our low draw on medicare/medicaid too as a result.
It works in Hawaii, to save you money.
Because that has everything to do with medical coverage and nothing to do with living in freaking Hawaii.

It has a lot to do with liv9ing in Hawaii, SINCE EVERYTHING COST MORE IN HAWAII, only in this case it cost less, BECAUSE MANAGED COMPETITION MAKES SENSE, IT IS PROVEN BY THIS CASE.
Only that takes logic, something absent from the whole Obamacare discussion.

If instead of chasing huge national systems -- what would happen if it were set up merely to cover catastrophic? IE if you incur over $50,000 in medical costs you would be covered up to a maximum of say $1,000,000.
This would be a lot cheaper and less intrusive than anything being proposed.
It would solve the hospital problem where someone racks up tons of bills and can't pay.
It would make insurance CHEAPER because there would be less liability with it -- IE if you were to buy health insurance it would be to cover part of that initial $50,000.
It would be far harder to scam as you would need to have $50,000 of bills before it kicked in at all.
We know from BT's trolling that this wouldn't work.
People who get sick should be shot instead. Assholes!

I think you're not considering the obvious.
people who lack insurance would still be bankrupted by $50k in medical bills.
purchased insurance might be slightly cheaper, but you would end up paying double in reality because you're paying taxes for one system, and private industry for the other, and expecting them to not only co-exist, but work together.
I don't think you realize how easy it is to accrue $50k in medical bills. My cancer treatment was half a million.

Some day all of the RWNs who hate Obamacare because of this and the LWNs who want single payer are going to see that they're on the same side. Single payer is a boon to business, especially small businesses who would pay far less in whatever taxes this would entail than they could get in group plans for small insurance pools.

And oh yeah, the board went boom when I tried to reply to OP earlier today. Catastrophic care versus comprehensive care might have merit, but your numbers are WAY off. $10k should be the largest threshold to consider (which even that would break most families), and there can't be a maximum annual benefit. There can of course be limitations on what treatments are covered, and qualifications for them. That might sound harsh, but otherwise we'd all be forced to pay for portable blood cleansing machines and bionic bodies. (Before you rainmen respond, that was a minor hyperbole.)
