If instead of chasing huge national systems -- what would happen if it were set up merely to cover catastrophic? IE if you incur over $50,000 in medical costs you would be covered up to a maximum of say $1,000,000.

This would be a lot cheaper and less intrusive than anything being proposed.

It would solve the hospital problem where someone racks up tons of bills and can't pay.

It would make insurance CHEAPER because there would be less liability with it -- IE if you were to buy health insurance it would be to cover part of that initial $50,000.

It would be far harder to scam as you would need to have $50,000 of bills before it kicked in at all.

I don't know, but there are a lot of people that would be completely ruined for far less than 50k anyway.

I dont think I understand what you are saying. An unemployed person gets sick and has to pay out of pocket 50K before a national health insurance plan kicks in?

Any person would have to pay out of pocket before it was covered on the national level. There would still be state safety nets etc and most people would still have insurance of course -- but the national government would only handle catastrophic. Yes that means if you have no health insurance you could be on the hook for $50k but not more than $50k.

There is a huge gap in your premise here. Most people without insurance would just continue to go to emergency rooms and get treated that way. This is the biggest problem right now is that the uninsured are driving up insurance costs for the rest of us because they are going to the ER and not paying anything. Essentially only the rich would ever get medical care.

LOL

While the intention is there, in reality it would be as inefficient and corrupt as the current system is

$50k in hospital bills is not hard to do...

my Dad's double knee replacement surgery was somewhere around $1.5 million before insurance paid...which is just ridiculous. I think rehab was included in that.

if you ever go into an ICU, they charge like $25k per day or something crazy

Everyone with a job gets coverage by law, paid by the employer.

Our people live longer than anywhere in the USA, and our costs are the cheapest especially when you consider our low draw on medicare/medicaid too as a result.

It works in Hawaii, to save you money.
