One of my best test drives was in my 20s.. ultimate cheesy salesman.. he kept using awful puns and phrases like "oh we're really going to have to sharpen the pencils on this one!"
so we finally get to the test drive, get out on the highway.. I'm driving conservative.. and he's like "oh give it some gas, see how this thing goes" so I said ok, punched it and got to over 95 mph, weaving in and out of traffic, and he suddenly dropped the shtick, was visibly shaken and was saying uh what are you doing? I said, unleashing the ponies like you said hahaha
well we got back to the dealership, I said no thanks, went across the street and bought a 4x4.

When I bought my first car in February , the salesman gave me the keys and told me to go for a drive. I came back in about 20 minutes, and he made me go back out again. Came back 20 minutes after that and bought it.

No, but the last time I test drove a vehicle, it was my Jeep back in 1998....and they asked for all of that before the drive, and a sales-person was with me when I did.
It's why I find those VW commercials funny...where the test drivers and friends/family members are with them, and they take the car home/plan the Vegas trip, and the VW employee is all like "Umm, guys..."

This is how all my test drives go. I have an honest face and trusting demeanor. (cue evil music) This does happen every time though, I just get handed keys. I am way to honest to take advantage of this though.
Hell at work tonight I got a tipped on top of a gratuity and I asked the person that signed the card if he heard me mention the grat. He did and thought I just worked hard enough for it.

yeah.
tested 2 used cars that I looked at off craigslist that way, and another which became the one I bought.
and went to a few dealerships that just asked to see my license and asked if I had any insurance (but didn't go further as to make copies of them or anything).

my test driving experience has been half and half.
some of them figure you aren't going to leave your car there to jack one of theirs, some insist on going with you for the test drive and don't ask for info, some want a copy of your license and insurance and your car keys before they'll take you out.

I've never test drove a car before but that'd be kinda weird. Either that or they don't see you as the type of person who'd just never come back. If I accidentally got in a fender binder or something when I test drove and they had none of my information I'd totally ditch the car in a river or something
