I'd invent a new type of electrical network system called a Bio-neural gel pack

For the most part, the idea you can bed down and survive with a bunch of supplies is a myth.  The reality is that when SHTF, you have other people to contend with because once they realize you have something and they don't, they come get it.  A few guns and some ammo isn't going to protect you for very long. What is more important is knowing WHAT to do in these situations. That being said, we could probably survive a year with the calories available in our house, but it doesn't really matter if somebody comes and burns your house down around your ears now does it?  Or you get killed on the way to your hidy hole or whatever.

Is it sad I didn't even need a pic to know exactly what you were talking about?

No electronics I suppose, but my camping gear would last for a while and in a doomsday scenario I would of course immediately bike downtown(assuming cars were dead) and gather as much survival gear/food as possible before it was all looted.

Thing is, it happened in 1859 and nobody cared... Just a bunch of really bright auroras. "People in the northeastern U.S. could read newspaper print just from the light of the aurora." All it did in a practical sense back then was take out telegraphs... We didnt have anything more sophisticated to be destroyed.

If the 1859 event happened next week, you wouldn't have electricity for a long time. Thing is the unpreparedness is willful. We could have extra big transformer replacements in shielded locations -- but we do not. Other possible methods would be a nuke up in the atmosphere -- say right off the east coast -- that would take out the electronics of many of the big cities and the surrounding areas.

In a large scale EMP attack you have a lot more to worry about, such as who's coming to occupy the infrastructure. In a small scale attack, just get new stuff outside the blast zone, which is where you'll want to be anyways since a bunch of morons will be panicking in the immediate area.

i watched one of those what if shows on the discovery channel and it was covering various end of the world scenarios and one of them is catching the broadside of a solar flare/storm. various experts said it would take 2-3 years just to repair the electrical grid at minimum.
the one statement that stuck with me was "that it only took 4 days for the trappings of civilization to be stripped away in New Orleans after katrina"

People weigh their options at all times. If the support and threat of society is no longer present, even if only in perception, you should GTFO of the area so long as it's feasible.

If you have important files or small electronic devices that you wish to protect from an EMP all you need is a faraday cage.

Build a wooden framed box and wrap that box with fine copper mesh screen. Run a copper wire to a ground. You now have safe electronics. I will be building one as soon as I can find some copper mesh.

An old microwave can offer protection too. Make sure it is plugged in though so that you have the ground connected from your outlet.
