My wife had a Betta that survived over a year. He just popped up to the surface this week and got the Christian fish burial down the toilet.

I'm keeping Dwarf Cichlids (Rams) at the moment.
What you're seeing is a territory problem. You need to make sure you have plenty of things in your tank for your fish to hide in / behind. Also make sure you have some top water plants.
