and yes they are... actually were quite spectacular when I saw them last. Down this far they were more of glows and spots and not the ribbons of high latitudes.

But as with other beautiful things... these can be disastrous. Just ask the Canadians who lost a good portion of their power grid one time from a solar storm that introduced a couple extra kilowatts into it.
