CME = Coronal Mass Ejection

2012-01-23 15:01 Geomagnetic Storm Expected Tuesday, Jan 24

As the strongest Solar Radiation Storm (S3) since May, 2005 continues, the associated Earthward-directed Coronal Mass Ejection is expected to arrive about 1400 UT (9am EST) Jan 24. SWPC has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch with G2 level storming likely and G3 level storming possible, with the storm continuing into Wednesday, Jan 25. All of this activity is related to a moderate (R2) Radio Blackout x-ray flare that erupted Sunday night (11pm EST).

Effects of a G3 CME:

Power systems: voltage corrections may be required, false alarms triggered on some protection devices.

Spacecraft operations: surface charging may occur on satellite components, drag may increase on low-Earth-orbit satellites, and corrections may be needed for orientation problems.

Other systems: intermittent satellite navigation and low-frequency radio navigation problems may occur, HF radio may be intermittent, and aurora has been seen as low as Illinois and Oregon (typically 50° geomagnetic lat.)**.

IE - Peeps in Seattle, if we have clear skies we may be able to see it

I had a mass ejection once.

Or was it a mass erection?

Either way...

Two sites for tracking solar weather....

btw... you need a Kp of around 8 or 9 and you get the northern lights down around Virginia level.

We really need to do something about man made global warming.

For 30 some years I had never seen the northern lights in Virginia... my parents had never seen them nor any of my grandparents. Then around 8 years ago we saw them. Now good chance again for them in the next 36 hours.

Humans may have added to the issue, but I don't think we are all the reason behind it. There are some scientists who have been doing planetary models of orbital planes, rotations, global tilts, etc that have been finding some interesting correlations.

Give the person a Kewpie Doll! But the latest I heard, the scientists were expanding on those theories with solar inputs and other spatial data sources.
