The only non-skill part of the Patriots Ravens game was the refball portion, and that worked against the Patriots when the refs called a good pass incomplete, denying the Patriots a vital first down.

Everything else, pure skill. If the Ravens were able to make their kicking plays, the Patriots still would have scrapped their way to an OT win anyways.

Same for the Giants 49ers game; special teams are skill, not luck.

Special Teams are a huge part of the game. The game should be thought of in 3rds. 1/3 offense. 1/3 defense. 1/3 special teams. Typically you need to win 2 of those 3 phases to win a game.

You can get by with just a run of the mill, get the job done special teams. Like you could win a super-bowl with the 16th-20th ranked special teams. You usually need an exceptional offense/defense, compared to the other teams, to go all the way.

So while important I wouldn't split it 3 ways.

I would not say "skill" since it is so infrequent and chaotic most times, however, I definitely know it is a combination of preparation (coaching) and hustle! There is always a slim factor of luck in special teams, but luck can be manufactured with repetition.

Repetition is the father of skill.

it sucks to be special teams because 90% of the time you are just doing what is expected. if you are doing your job well then you aren't noticeable, only when you do something miraculous like a big punt return or a block are you getting street cred.

It's easiest to make special team. What does that tell you?

I think they should make a sport of doing nothing but kick offs. Most fun part of the game ever

Repetition is the father of skill.

Special teams is all about fundamentals. "Don't screw it up" should be the motto of specials teams units everywhere.

A lot of what Special Teams does doesn't show up very well in the box score. You very rarely see the statistic that shows where each team begins its drive, how many punts were inside the 20, opposing teams punt and kickoff return averages. These situations are often what cost or win you the game.

Instead of the team winning by a field goal, they lose by 10 points because they were covered well on punt returns, gave up big return yardage and allowed a kickoff return to score.
