I think that's because people rely on mouth movements and facial expressions a lot more than they realize. I have the same problem.

I get yelled at at work because I can never hear my dispatcher over the radio. I ask him to repeat himself more than once sometimes and he thinks I'm screwing with him. My hearing ability in my left ear is diminished and thats the side the speaker is on. He doesn't understand the issue I have.

Tell him to quit being a douche or you'll report him for discriminating against people with disabilities.
I have the same problem, I have a difficult time hearing, especially on the phone. people get so mad that I want to have entire conversations through text... but it's because I want it to be done with FASTER than if we talked about it, I asked you 5 times to repeat yourself, then pretended that I understood because you were getting pissed that I can't understand your words. Then two days later when I don't pick you up at the airport and you get pissed at me, it's because I didn't hear that part and pretended that I did to placate you.

Or... you could take the reasonable approach and explain the situation to him.
