I ended taking the older one apart and sticking it in the tower. I"m tempted to void the warranty on the new one and stick it in the tower as well. This is still taking forever..

probably sharing the same bus... maybe try plugging one in on the opposite side of the tower, back or front.

That is too slow. USB 1.1 should be able to get at least 4mb/s. Even if two drives shared the bus and cut the speed in half, that would still be 2mb/s on the slowest USB bus available. Even USB 2.0 should be massively faster. Something's wrong.
