I have never been there on a cruise because my brother lives in Anchorage but i have heard the best thing to do is to get away from the cruise ship activities at Seward and do your own thing. There is a lot to do in Seward, if you have kids along, take them to the Sea Life Center. That's pretty awesome. Also, go in June or July - those are about the best months to visit Alaska but still bring along plenty of warm clothes. Oddly enough, many people don't bring warm clothing and it usually won't get over 70 degrees there in the summer. It also gets pretty cold on the water.

We are going to visit my brother in July this year. He and his wife are retiring in a year or so and will be moving to the lower 48. They are tired of the winters.

Took one southbound from Seward to Vancouver with stops through Glacier Bay, and stop at Juneau, Ketchican, Skagway.

9 days isn't enough to see everything you might want to see but a cruise is a good first taste:

Anchorage: Take a DC-3 flight up to McKinley--amazing
Kenai Peninsula down to Seward: One of the top 2 best drives I've ever had.
Seward: Just returned rental car and went to the ship
Glacier Bay: Just beautiful, probably would have been born when I was a kid.
Skagway: Can't for the life of me remember what I did
Juneau: Great little city. I visit state capitols and this one was decent but there's only 2 ways to get there and a cruise was more fun. I'll never forget the salmon caesar salad.
Ketchican: The lumberjack show is a must.
At Sea: relaxing and common to see whales.
Vancouver: A high end Seattle.

no one going can take off more than 9 days (My mom is the most limited, as she has just started up a new clinic and is one of the head people and she gets too far behind if she misses), and that's really more than we want anyways...with 2 young kids, 9 days away from home is a long time, especially with the youngest being only 1 as of a few days ago. Someone has to be with her at every waking moment, and in the near vicinity 24/7.

Plus, as I said, it's 5 of us and 2 kids, minimum. We have 2 retired neighbors who want to go if they can, and I have 2 great Aunts/Uncles (as in 4 people) who want to go also if time permits...So anywhere from 7 to 13 people, and none of those options allow for RV's.

Also, one of the great Aunts will NOT go to Alaska in a vehicle. They went up there when my other great aunt and Uncle lived in Alaska (they are the other couple thinking about going, they lived there for 10 years...in Anchorage I think) and rented an RV...They were driving around sight-seeing on their last day there and went down a road they shouldn't have (was a small road with no barriers on the side and it got even smaller the further they went in)...They got to a point where they decided to turn around and found a wide area. They ended up backing up a foot or so too far and the road/ground underneath it broke up and slid down. They rolled backwards down about a 40 foot drop (not straight down, but WAYYY too steep for a vehicle to be on, especially that size), and flipped over 3 or 4 times. Luckily someone had seen them turn on the road who knew the area and decided to go check on them after not seeing them come back after a while.

so anyways, an RV would be out of the question for multiple reasons Plus, none of us have ever been on a cruise, and my parents have been to Alaska before in a car...That's not gonna happen again.

that would have been scary
