I take beef stock, a big hocking pot roast, a bunch of common veggies w. a bay leaf and crock pot the crap out of it for 8 hours. then I take the veggies out, skim some of the fat off the broth and use a blend of flour and water on the stock to thicken it on a stove and make biscuits.

I used to use cornstarch, but then I discovered a use for dried mashed potatoes. Man, talk about a thick hearty stew.
