I'd written to her about nothing in particular and asked, hey, btw, heard from any of the schools you applied at? (She was applying to neuroscience programs.)
She replied that she'd been rejected from all of them and was completely crushed. 
Late last year she was laid off from her position at a pharmaceutical company, but we were all figuring no biggie, she could relax on her (rather generous) severance until September. Not sure what to say now.

I forgot how many she applied with but I think it was around four or five in various areas of the country. Yes, she only applied within the United States.

ouch that's rough.
I know my brother was denied to a few places because he only applied to places that were also going to give him some sort of monetary amount for coming to the school. He couldn't afford it on his own, so he had to go this route, and you have to be pretty intense/special to get 'a free ride'.
Maybe she did something similar?
All I can say is if she has the grades for grad school to keep slugging it out, apply to other schools and she'll get in somewhere. Whether it's the caliber she wanted...that might be another story, but if you're top say 3? 5? places don't let you in...apply to the next 5 you would prefer...
