probably combat stress. Feel bad for the guy because he will probably get life but what he did suggest a mental break down of some sort.

A US Soldier today was walking through Kandahar when his gun missfired. The US Army is investing the incident.
A US Soldier today was walking through Kandahar when he saw a suspected Taliban Operative moving to detonate his suicide vest. After the soldier shot him, it was discovered that the suspected operative was in fact, not an operative. A full investigation will be launched.
After many months of blood shed, a US Soldier today suffering extreme PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) had a complete break down and walked off base and shot an unarmed civilion.
After 6 worthless US Soldier deaths from barbaric idiots that got upset about a Koran burning, a US Soldier today decided enough is enough and went out to rid the world of some idiots.
A baby killer decided he hadn't killed anybody for a few days and went out and killed somebody else. BOOHAA!

I think most US service members go to war with a sense of honor, valor, courage, etc...
Until they face the crucible of combat, then people change.

I think most do it because it's a job and then combat changes them. I'm just basing this off those I know which is anecdotal at best.
