The hyperventilate and pass out thing is quite different from what I remember. My brother would squat down, take several very deep breaths, hold his breath, stand up with his arms down, have me wrap him up from behind and squeeze as hard as I cold. He would fall down, the eyes would roll into the back of his head, his body would jerk spasmatically, and he would think it was as cool as hell. Seeing this I never wanted to do it, but I was always willing to help hi. LOL

Maybe I misunderstood the article then or am thinking of something different because what you describe is exactly what I did back then 20+ years ago (minus the mini seizure thing).

Also called the Fainting Game, Pass Out, or Space Monkey, the Choking Game can be played individually or in groups. It consists of manually choking yourself or others, sticking a plastic bag over the head, tying a string around the neck or hyperventilating, all in search of a few seconds of euphoria.

I assumed this is what we were talking about here (bolded text above) - obviously if you introduce other mechanical things like ropes, bags, etc., the danger factor goes up by logarithmically.

Tap out bitch!

Yeah, I even worry for the fighter that refuses to tap out and goes limp. At least they have medical people there to help them.

those are all chokes that cut off blood to your brain for seconds. unless the guy sat there and held the choke for minutes, the amount of time it takes for your brain to start dying, there isn't a whole lot of risk. they let go, your carotid arteries open back up, and you wake up in a daze. maybe if you fall into a weird position and impair your own breathing, and nobody ever moves you, it might go wrong.

the worst that's happened to me is actually defending the choke. you can use your chin to stop their arm from getting around your neck. it works unless the guy is stupidly strong and the pressure on your jaw really painful :/

doing the same thing with a string or a bag is dumb, especially if you are by yourself. obviously it can easily go wrong if you're unconscious and your implement is still going, lol.
