Yes, for the "think about it from the other side" reason, not for the "to make someone upset" reason. My wife always fails to note that distinction.

I had a boss that would constantly disagree with people in order to 'challenge their convictions'. He said if they couldn't stand up and explain what they believed in logically they didn't deserve to voice their opinions in public...
I understood his logic, but I also thought he was an argumentative a-hole

I am argumentative just to challenge people's opinions. Sometimes to get a reaction out of them, and sometimes to get them to look at it from a different perspective.
But not everyone. I have a friend who I can call out on everything and challenge everything she says, and most of the time it's fine, sometimes I get to her but she gets over it.
Some other people, such as my sister, get offended and mad when I call her out on basically anything, no matter how small.

I don't usually do it to piss them off, usually do it just so someone is representing the alternate side/theory.
