New York (CNN) – Divorce. Dinosaurs, Birthdays. Religion. Halloween. Christmas. Television. These are a few of the 50-plus words and references the New York City Department of Education is hoping to ban from the city’s standardized tests.

Misleading title. Words being taken off standardized tests is alot different than banning it outright. If they have reason to think that some kids may have more familiarity with it, (let's say boys play with them more, so they are more likely to be able to read the word) I dont see what the big deal is. It might not be true, it might not be a good reason, but banning a word is a far cry from not using it on tests.
If standardized tests had a bunch of words related to yachts, you can imagine there would be different scores, regardless of intelligence, between rich kids and poor kids. Poor kids would seem less intelligent simply because they don't know what it is. The same would be true if you used alot of slang that one group would clearly understand and one group might not be exposed to. I dont understand the reason for the dinosaur thing, but its not like my kid would get expelled for pretending to be a t rex on the playground

i can see Divorce having an edge...the little hood kids never knew their daddy nevermind having been through a divorce.
Dinosaurs? sooo are they eliminated from classes as well?
Birthdays? i just dont get, who doesn't have a birthday?
Religion? i guess i am OK with, but there is no edge there.
Halloween? silly, just silly.
Christmas? i guess if it's a question specifically about it, but used as a description that's dumb.
Television? i just dont get it, unless they shortened it to TV alone for the lazy?

The title is misleading but there are plenty of ridiculous things being banned in school. Birthday parties, valentines day.... Seems like anything is believable anymore. Sad.
