there was a story about a character who was "wi flagged" and the only player flagged with this who would have monsters rush at him from clicks away and he'd always die and could never level. Pretty sure it was part of lore or something.

As far as some of the devs believing it existed too, I know why. Back in the day I was a monarch and had a follower that worked for Turbine. When we did what were then hard quests they would sometimes watch our group on screen. One example was the Shendolian Shield quest.
Anyway, when the Citadel was still pretty new I took my lower level followers in one Sunday to hunt. The guy that worked for Turbine got butt raped. When he got back we cleared the halls to let him recover. And they raped him again. At that time you could not recover for anyone else. He came back maybe 5 times and would die every time. As soon as he hit the door they pulled off whoever they were on and attacked him. It didn't matter we were beating on them and casting on them. He eventually just gave up and had lost a ton of gear.

The 'Wi Flag' had nothing to do with your loot. It had to do with your death. There was a hash generated based on the name given to your character at creation. That hash was used in a roll each time a monster 'rolled' to see who it was going to attack first. The people with the 'wi flag' were always attacked first no matter who they were with or what damage someone else had done to a monster, etc.
yep. My tank archer Accident had one. Everything would fly past the designated meat shields to get to me, no matter what the situation was.
