My first experience with holiday depression

We are involved in our regular end of the year maintenance, we are replacing 5 tanks, 33'x6'x3' and of course they are in the middle of the line so we had to remove 18 total. All the tanks we pull have to be cleaned inside and out and refiberglassed inside, it is a lot of hard work. I didn't know it but one of mt maintenance guys has been having some family problems and has been depressed this holiday season. I don't know if he became frustrated with something he was doing or what but he gave a yell and slashed his arm open with a utility knife then used the knife to keep people away from him while blood gushed out of his arm. A couple of the other guys finally grabbed him about the time I got out there and I got a tourniquet on him. He was taken to County USC hospital and now is in one of there mental health facilities under observation.
It is kind of scarey to thing someone would want to end their life over a build up of problems, none really insurmountable, but they probably just kept adding to the pressure until he snapped.

Its a difficult time of the year for many people
A woman at my former workplace did that to her arm with a box knife.

Last year at this time, my ex attempted suicide. She says it was because she was taking a cocktail of anti-depressants which caused her to break from reality. I believe her.
Depression is real. It is dangerous. People who attempt suicide seek a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I feel a closeness to people with mental illnesses. I tried to become a clinical art therapist, but ran into a female director, who kicked out of the program for arguing with her. In my practicum, I was getting very good results with some very florid delusional patients.

Years ago I wanted to kill myself, wanted to but not really. When push came to shove I wanted to live. Shouldve gotten mental health treatment the moment my thoughts were serious on this
I also believe a person willing to kill themself is also more willing to harm and kill others too in the right situation
I really believe if you are suffering from serious depression that you wont be able to cure yourself and you should get professional help. Sometimes a person must humble themself and ask for help.

It was all pretty scarey, we were going to work through the weekend but everyone was shaken up so I decided we would take off until Tuesday. I talked to the guys wife a bit ago to see if there was anything she needed and she told me she wasn't going to see him and wouldn't let the kids go either.

Wow. Just looking in through the window on this but why would she not want to go give him some support?
This seems like a time when the man needs support from his closest loved ones the most.

Thats probably why he was upset - i presume they had a fight. And it looks like she doesnt care about him and probably never did.

Wow that sucks. It sucks for him, his family, and you and your co-workers who now have to associate Christmas with something horrifying like this.
I hope the guy gets the help he needs.
