Our planet is very old, and could possibly give birth to new life for billions of years to come.
We might not be the first advanced civilization on this planet. This may not even be the first time humanity has risen.
There is a lot we don't know.

not only that, but they could stick with wood burning steam, go to electric without having fossil fuel. burn lots of trees. Fossil fuels just made it easier, Doesn't make it impossible to do it without.
hell our power-plants for the most part use steam to power turbines.
