If you despise huttball play republic. Seriously. Empire gets 80% huttball, Republic gets maybe 5% huttball. This seems to be true across almost every server, although the imbalance is slightly less on PVE servers.

I'll probably roll some Republic alts some time, but all my friends are playing Empire, so I'm pretty much stuck with it.
