"GREENBELT, Md. - A former soldier from Maryland has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization in Somalia.

Federal prosecutors in Maryland say 24-year-old Craig Baxam of Laurel was arrested Friday. He is charged with attempting to provide support to al-Shabab by trying to join its ranks.

Prosecutors say Baxam left the United States in December and was arrested by Kenyan authorities, who suspected he was traveling to Somalia to join al-Shabab. He was interviewed by FBI agents in Kenya and arrested on his return to Maryland.

Baxam faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted, followed by three years of supervised release.

Prosecutors say Baxam was in the army from 2007 to July 2011 and served in Baghdad and Korea."

Why are they wasting time charging him? Why not just throw a black bag over his head and ship him off to some undeclared destination and play ping pong with his balls using electrified paddles forever?

So..former service men are considered traitors if they want to join another army?

Stupid, ignorant or evil

My guess is that his failed attempt to provide aid and comfort to the enemy leaves too much wiggle room for the defense.

If he served only 4 years active duty from 2007 to 2011 then yes he is. He still has a military ID and is in reserve status. It's called the Individual Ready Reserve. He does not belong to a unit and does not train but he must be ready to be recalled to active duty. I don't remember if the requirement is 8 or 10 years total sservice (Active and reserve).
