I know lots of people who will come back and show you there photographs from their missionary trip to Africa. Why not just help here? It is not as glamorous saying I'm helping out down at skid row or in South Central Los Angeles, but it can have just as much effect.

Missonaries are a good sell and so a good money maker. Actually I am not sure that the USA is even in the top 5 countries that send out missionaries. Asia is taking over that duty since the USA doesn't really have many Christians left.

I would imagine that there is a massive difference in our needy and 3rd world shithole needy.
The worst off American is way better off than the best of those living in places like Africa and Detroit.
(edit: meaning, the other peeps are way more in need of help than people here are.)

Most overseas volunteers don't necessarily do much to really help people.
The motivation is generally back-slapping rather than really helping. You go to burkastan and plant some trees and then come back in five years and all the trees are dead because no one cared about them.
The biggest contribution most of these people make to the country they go to is the money they inject into the local economy.
