A down-on-his-luck soap-opera actor took his own life this week after he was forced to put his beloved dog to sleep under pressure from his Upper West Side condo and became wracked by grief, pals said.
Nick Santino euthanized his dog, Rocco, Tuesday — on Santino’s 47th birthday. That night, his guilt over the gut-wrenching decision became too much to bear.

“Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend,” a despondent Santino wrote in a suicide note, said close friend Stuart Sarnoff.
“Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”

I am shaking my head in disbelief, trying to decide whether to laugh at the stupid or mourn his lack of self worth.

Imagine the pain, suffering and anger. A successful suicide is the end of the line. There was nothing really humorous, to me in the note. The person was grief stricken and experienced a psychotic break from reality which cost him his life. Laugh if you want.

If it was that important to him why didn't he just move?

It obviously wasn't about the dog, it was just that that toppled him, he was already struggling.

When there is this much self-loathing, then your thinking tends towards black or white.

putting a dog to sleep is not an easy thing to do even when they are suffering and in their last moments anyway.

the article says he was already struggling.
the condo probably passed a no dogs (probably no pitbulls) rule and told him he had to get rid of it.

some people cant afford to just up and move on a moments notice.

had it been me, i would have faught it tooth and nail to the point of me being forcibly removed from my home with my dog in tow.

i can totally understand his grief.
its disgusting that anyone would support this kind of action or even consider endorsing such a law/rule.

my dog is like my only son.
would any of you willingly take your child to the clinic to be murdered just because someone else is afraid of them or just plain doesnt like him?

How is it legal to make an HOA policy change like that without grandfathering the people who got the dog before the policy change?

Edit: yes, i can understand there would be grief but not to the point of suicide - there was something else going on there.

I know a guy that killed himself- he was extremely outgoing, friendly, into martial arts, an all around nice guy.. And then i hear he kills himself. I always thpught he was happy. You just never know whats going on with people.

maybe the companionship he got from his little buddy was the only thing he really had to keep him grounded?
if he was out of work and struggling, things can be really difficult. murdering your little buddy could easily be the last straw.

The way I understand it, he was technically grandfathered... but a coop board has all kinds of ways to apply "soft pressure."
