The patented design doesn't shoot straight. Instead of a spiral rotation, the bullet twists and turns to guide itself towards a laser directed point. It can make up to thirty corrections per second while in the air.

Jim Jones, distinguished member of technical staff, and his team of engineers at Sandia Labs think the .50-caliber bullets would work well with military machine guns so soldiers could hit their mark faster and with precision.

Impressive!

if you can get a laser on it can't you just shoot it regular style? Not that this isn't cool, just can't think of the direct application.

The laser can be applied from a drone or plane and from much longer distance than the gun can shoot. The shooter can simply fire around a corner without exposing themselves. Or they can fire at will and not worry about maintaining their aim due to the recoil of the machine gun and know that their bullets will still hit the target.

I would think it could be used in a situation were you have a spotter that can paint a target, and then a shooter that may not be able to be in the best of shooting locations.

I would also think it could be used in a full auto situation were you have one guy laser the target, and the other guy go to town with a mounted 50 cal. full of these things.

Yeah I guess I can see both of those. Still seems pretty limited for what I ams ure was a very expensive cost to develop.

Lasers don't have recoil.
