IMO newt had the only shot at beating Obama. He's a wild card and unpredictable which can lead to disaster or to great success.
Romney will go the way of Kerry in '04. A boring uninteresting guy against an unpopular president. The GOP thinks that the not-Obama vote will be enough since there will be no pro-Romney vote worth mentioning.

Kerry's biggest liabilities were not fighting the swift boat accusations and being an anti-war candidate in a time of war (or more precisely, not knowing if he was an anti-war candidate or not).
This is not the 2004 election. A lot of moderates are fed up with Obama and may give Romney a crack at it.

Newt said he didn't congratulate Romney because Romney was mean to him.
