I'm a nice guy and cut people a lot of slack
I'm not asking to be held in high esteem here, I just want basic human dignity. For some people, this is too much to ask for... It's not surprising that most of them smoke.

Smokers are pretty much by definition self-absorbed assholes who don't care about people around them. If they weren't they wouldn't smoke. At least not in public.

Either have a trusty bucket of water stationed nearby or carry a mini spray bottle if this happens often.
When the snarky ones ignore you and raise the lighter to their cig, douse them and tell them you saved them from an approaching fiery death. Then twitch a bit.
