Irresponsible? The adult is right there, the dog is calm, the baby is calm.

Nothing wrong with any of that.

You never know 100%.

My friend when i was a kid had half her face bitten by their german shepherd(she was 1).. It was a very sweet dog, but she approached the dog the wrong way and in a split second the dog took one quick strike and then backed off. They put that dog to sleep for making that mistake.

Every responsible dog owner knows that dogs make mistakes and it just takes one mistake for something very serious to happen.

Edit: for instance, thte baby couldve poked the dog in the eye and the dog could react by bitting the kids hand. Babies are unpredictable and so are dogs.

Most of which can be traced back to poor owners, and poor breeders.

Most bites go unreported.

I walk my dog all the time, ive been bitten and attacked several times.

There are a lot of out of control dogs that do crap and the owner always says "my dog is nice".. Uhh no.

Maulings get reported and its usually by dogs that are instinctually inclined to bite and never let go (which btw are the most annoying dogs when they steal a ball at the park/beach).

9 years ago when my daughter was born our German Shepherd would let her pretty much torture her, and if it got to be too much she'd whine and run away. However, the first time a stranger (wife's uncle but the dog had never met him) went to hold her he barely had his arm fully extended toward her to pick her up and the dog lunged out like a freakin cobra and bit down on his forearm.
We always had to watch her around strangers when the kids were present after that but she never once showed any anger with the kids no matter what. Of course, that particular Shepherd was the one from a K9 unit and had been trained, but still...

The two we have had since then were also great with the kids but did require some boundries being established as pups. Never had a problem after that though.

I'd imagine your mileage would vary with 3 different pitbulls.
