Let's get SOME perspective. Worst in the WORLD?

Let's at least place us ahead of the countries where there are no public schools.

Then place us in front of the ones who do have some public/charity schools, but most never get to go there because the kids are being pressed into armies and gangs at the age of 10 and 12.

It's not a point of pride, but it is the typical hyperbole used to paint a picture of "entitlement" where there is none.

The world SUCKS. Even with the degradation and hollowing out of our core values, what we have here in the US is still heaven. By most standards.

For as long as we can keep it.

We have a very thin veil of an illustration of what might be considered heaven by a few small minority of people...

Running water you don't have to walk 2+ miles to get every day, and emergency rooms that are REQUIRED to see you... that constitutes some circle of heaven for about 50% of the world which doesn't enjoy those two items alone.

I certainly won't disagree. My problem with that is that is should be good for everyone. How we live in the US is certainly heaven to most 2nd and 3rd world countries, but knowing that it could be better for everyone, and also knowing that it never will be better is just a sad commentary on humanity in general and us specifically.

My niece is 16 years old. Last year she went with her church on a mission to Belize. She's not religious and I don't understand why the whole mission thing or church thing is for her. Anyway, she is a bit overweight and in Belize fat people are worshipped (take note outposters, move to Belize and be in the 1%) because they have the money to afford food. She was telling me about these people and how entire families will spend all day picking through trash looking for shit to eat. She told me how she cried when kids her age were asking here what it was like to be able to eat whenever wanted to. It was an eye opener for her, and I hope it is something she doesn't forget.

We live in a country where we throw away enough food to feed all the hungry people on the planet. We can produce enough food in this country alone to wipe out starvation around the world, but we don't. Why don't we do it? Here are the reasons I've been given when talking to people:

1) Logistics.
2) Cost.
3) It would ruin the local economies.

I call bullshit on all three because all that says to me is that $ > life.

You know the whole "HEY GUYS WERE NOT THE WORST - WE'RE BETTER THAN THE WORST SO WE'RE ACTUALLY NUMBER ONE" is totally a communistic mindset.

Not the goal you should be striving for, or indeed any modern society.
