"Jailing persons convicted of non-violent crimes, and long prison sentences for possession of microscopic quantities of illegal drugs. Federal law stipulates five years' imprisonment without possibility of parole for possession of 5 grams of crack or 3.5 ounces of heroin, and 10 years for possession of less than 2 ounces of rock-cocaine or crack. A sentence of 5 years for cocaine powder requires possession of 500 grams - 100 times more than the quantity of rock cocaine for the same sentence. Most of those who use cocaine powder are white, middle-class or rich people, while mostly Blacks and Latinos use rock cocaine. In Texas, a person may be sentenced for up to two years' imprisonment for possessing 4 ounces of marijuana. Here in New York, the 1973 Nelson Rockefeller anti-drug law provides for a mandatory prison sentence of 15 years to life for possession of 4 ounces of any illegal drug."

That law was changed last year. Rich cocaine users and poor cocaine users are now both punished the same.

Look, I'm not going to talk to you like some others but really man, you need to either do some research or put on your thinking cap. Jail produces broken people, often broken for life. Yes there are some that come out with their head screwed back on straight but that is not the norm.
You want jail for the worst, you do not want jail for people who are stupid or slow learners. You're always going to have screw ups in society, taking those screw ups and turning them hardcore is a really dumb thing to do.

You're referring to the NYS Rockefeller laws? If so I believe you are correct. However it still doesn't address the fundamental flaws.

its pretty crazy how there are laws for rich people and laws for poor people. poor people laws are always harsher.
the only place the little guy gets a leg up is small claims court, until the defendant appeals it till it goes to the next level of court.
