After several fruitless attempts to download a cracked version of Sony Vegas Pro 11 that wasn't infested with backdoors and keyloggers I finally sucked it up and bought the program legally. I think Sony puts up all those bad torrents themselves to make you pay for it. Worked with me.

Even your legal copy has a rootkit in it.

I'm aware of a lot. There's still trojans in that. Granted I'm not into that scene, but when the guys who crack it put something like "btw we put a keylogger into this so eff you idiots" it should make you careful.

Malware goes where the people go. Usenet, through an NZB service, is safer than bittorrent, as it simply has far, far less users. In addition, those users are very quick to report feedback on anything that contains any sort of malware.

I would scan anything before installing, of course; but I would trust something downloaded there sooner than I would bittorrent.

Also - by the way - if it is the keygen program that comes with a download being flagged as a virus, it just may not be. Virus Scanners such as Norton are big on flagging keygen programs as viruses not because they actually are viruses, but rather because Norton and the like are also against piracy and don't want people using such programs.

I find it really annoying that such programs would have this extra "feature" in them that has nothing to do with the functionality a user paid for.

Yeah cause that's going to be easy to guess for a random guy, which is a fasle positive and which isn't.

You only need 1 serious infection for your OS install to go to shit.

When

MS Security Essentials reports it as a threat. Okay maybe they just don't like cracks.
When uploading the .exe to an online scanner like 20/48 say it contains win32/Artemis or whatever.
In the little distribute text file where the crackers cheer for themselves deep down at the end they outright admit the file is infected.
Some retard on YT says those are just false positives and hey run it as an administrator!

Then I'm not taking any chances.

Slight risk of a computer virus > spending a million marks on video editing software!
