White racism has historically been far worse than black racism.
Not necessarily from a moral stand point, but from a practical stand point.
In the past white racism had a very real impact on your future. It affected every facet of your life.
Black racism just meant black people didn't like you. Which didn't matter because they were the bottom rung of society. They had no leverage.
While many of the systemic grievances of the past have been corrected, and a great majority of white Americans are not racist, there is still a generational memory of what was.
When we finally do reach equality black racism won't matter more. White racism will matter less.

It should bother you because of the intent behind it. It is a pejorative entirely based on race.
It is no different than the ones used to belittle other races, it just doesn't carry the social stigma that they do.

No, it really is different. Because 99% of the time the people saying it don't have any power over anyone else.
What makes racism more than just an ethical problem is when it is combined with power and particularly the state or employers.
Someone calling me a cracker on the street shows they are a racist douchebag but it doesn't really have any impact on my life the way that the pervasive discrimination of two generations ago had on black people, particularly in the south. The word "cracker" isn't a symbol of state oppression.
