They need to make some really fuel efficient four wheel drive small trucks

4x4 and fuel economy don't go well together. Tall=crappy aero.

That said, what you want is a little one. Which means something from the 80s, since they don't make little trucks any more.

Would love to trade my car in for a truck, but gas/tags every year would kill me. I know some guys with trucks that pay 600-900 bucks a year for their tags. Its ridiculous. Probably the only think keeping me from getting one. Care less about the gas. But the price for tags is outrageous for a truck

Yeah engine designs from the late 70s tend to be incredibly optimised and fuel efficient.

An injected mid-80s model is fairly efficient. And it's 1000lbs lighter than a new one.

My carbureted 1980 gets 30 on the highway, but it's also 2WD

Tags are a "flattish" $30 for any car/truck in WA state..

Get yourself a Suzuki Samurai to fix up, I am seeing more and more of them in the back areas of the desert.
