Holy crap, nerds were willing to donate $80,000 for a new game ending?!?

Well, to be fair, after all the time many players invested into these games, they'd expect something a little more epic. Sure, go ahead and throw in that weird ending or whatever, but for those who worked really hard to get the "good" ending, it should deliver.
It'd be like if George Lucas stopped the first Star Wars film as soon as they got off the Death Star, but before the awesome X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter scene and blowing it up stuff. Sure, they saved the Princess, but the Death Star is still lurking around, and we want to see it blown up for destroying that innocent planet earlier.
