this. I have an elliptical machine (stop laughing, I have bad knees) and some small weights that I use at home. Netflix also has some workout videos that I put on from time to time to mix things up. This way I don't have to put up with 5000 n00bs from January - March every year, there's no one to see what I look like, I don't have to wait in line for the machine I want while the guy using it sits on it chatting with his friends, etc., etc.

Yeah I bought a decent treadmill (on sale) years back and some free weights and bench. Avoiding all the gross people at the gym, and old dudes walking around the locker room with their dongs out far outweighs the 1 hottie who forgot her bra you might miss.

Funny thing, that.
I joined Lifetime Fitness in July 2010 (90 pounds and 12 inches off the waist ago  ), and it was never really mega-crowded.
Until January 2011. Thing is, it seems like all of January it was full all of the time, then after that there was a slight falloff once February hit, but it hasn't quite calmed down to what it was when I joined.
It's been five years since the gym opened so its not necessarily that everyone all of a sudden wanted to join the new gym.
So hopefully once January is over it will calm down.

i'd love to have my own swimming pool but as my dad doesn't want to put one in, i'm stuck with the one at the gym. and that's all i'm going to the gym for.

The pool is really the only thing I miss about going to the gym. I don't miss the wildlife that would float around in it and take up space from people that wanted to actually work out in the pool...
The more I think about it, there are only about 6 people in every gym that are cool people to work out around. The rest are large wastes of space.

You can always go at odd times of day, that is what I try to do. I wouldn't mind the fellow fat people if it didn't mean the machines are always taken.
To answer the question, it generally goes until mid-March at my gym, but then you get the summer body people in starting in April or May.
