You hear so much your common sense just takes over. I just say a headline "Milky Way home to 100 billion alien planets?" and I don't even have to read it to know they'll talk about the possibility of intelligent life. Well I gotta say, that just isn't as likely as they think it is. Yes, we are part of the Milky Way, but a very remote part.
We are on the outer fringes of one of the spiral arms. The closer you go to the center the more dense it is. There will eventually be a saturation level where no intelligent life can exist. Why? Radiation! Yes, radiation. We are already bombarded by it from our own sun. Luckily we have an iron core planet so have a polarized planet. This magnetic field is the only think that protects us from the blast. Now imagine you are in a sector of space that is crowded by galactic terms.
Yeah, we already get enough radiation to affect life here. On these other planets life as we know it would never have a chance to develop. These are all my thoughts. Not backed up by science as far as I know.

We know a fraction of a percent about life and how it works. I think it is a safe statement to say that life exists on other planets, in abundance, and we just aren't smart enough to find it yet.
