Any civilization that has progressed to space travel would most likely view us as barely above a viral infestation. They would be correct.

They could have passed by 4 billion years ago when there was nothing to see. They may have said "too soon, we'll be back." But 4 billion years is a long time for an alient civilization to either find a way to destroy themselves or evolve/ascend to a state that exploration in the traditional sense is no longer necessary or even desirable.
It is possible they colonized this planet long ago and filled in our DNA to jump start the human race. It is possible that just about every civilization goes extinct before discovering interstellar travel.
Lots of time and lots of possibilities.
