I'm kind of thinking, because coal veins are juxtaposed on states with no other real industry, THAT'S what's leading to poverty

I mean, imagine if there were massive coal mining ops in WA, alongside Microsoft, Amazon, etc. Everyone would be like 'OMG COAL = MONEY'

I don't even understand what that's supposed to mean. Coal mining in eastern kentucky is how people there afford to buy food.

You can argue that mountain top removal sucks and is bad for the environment(although, I'm sure you enjoy your lights and TV and central air...). You can argue that it doesn't create as many jobs as advertised. You can not correlate the two. That's just asinine.

I've been to Grundy, VA which is outside of the dark red section in VA and there is pretty much no support for any other industry aside from people who visit to go hiking and whatnot. Everyone lives in a really forested steep narrow valley where the roads will wind back and forth along the ridge. Agriculture isn't possible because the sunlight wouldn't hit the ground long enough to grow anything.

That said, for the people who live in the area, it provides jobs. But the only reason to continue living there is out of habit and tradition. There isn't anything to do, aside from hunting and following your high schools sports team.

I find that highly unlikely. Your main power source may be hydro or nuclear, but I can say with utmost certainty that some of it comes from coal.

Both, here in WA. Lots of dams, and a nuke plant on the eastern side of the state.

Dunno how much comes from coal, but we sell a lot of power to Cali.
