Good instincts.
Could very well have saved his life with that last second twist to land on his back.
edit: more impressive, he got back up and won the gold on on a later run.

Experience and training are the only things that will prompt someone to do that on a fall.
It is obvious he has much of both. The landing was flawlessly timed.

it would have had a different outcome if he landed on flat ground. At least the slope helped ease the fall.
