everyone starts somewhere, there are a lot of resources available for people trying to teach dogs certain tasks. 4H is who does most of the training for service animals in the volunteer sector in my area.

That's kinda the great thing about being a human, we can learn to do new things whenever we want to.

Boy, aren't you optimistic. If I was a betting man, which I am, I'd bet that years down the line you will have a beloved family pet and not a well trained service dog.

I've had 3 dogs and with each one the intent was to train them. Family is 0/3 on that. Training takes a ton of patience and i'm just talking about stuff like don't bark and behave. not the kind of stuff you're talking about with fetching and all the stuff service dogs are supposed to do.

My cocker spaniel is trained to do damn near every standard trick that dogs do, she's smart and learns quickly. She could easily learn the tasks to do what is needed, but she doesn't have the body mass necessary for it to work for our needs.

maybe your family is a bunch of lazy people that won't train the dog to stop jumping on people and licking them to death, but that doesn't mean that everyone is that way, or that it's particularly difficult to do, it's just time consuming.
