The only thing that I know about it, is that some pro SC2 players play it in their spare time.
Any advice for my first few matches to not embarrass myself too badly?

Don't be over agressive, play it safe untill you get a feel for what the other team can do.
Do a few bot matches to find what champion type you're comfortable with

There are a lot of things to learn. Curret meta is 1 top 1 jungle ap(magic) mid ad/support bottom.
One of the most important things you need to know is focus on last hitting. Care on pushing the lane unless you have good map sight.

Jump head first into it. It's the best and fastest way to learn. Care about the intricacies of gameplay later if you like the game.

I was stuck on that game for a few weeks, then I got over it...its more of a time-killer!

I jumped straight into public games knowing absolutely nothing. It's easy to pick up on the fly.
Here's one extremely important tip: most of the time you shouldn't attack or use abilities on enemy monsters until they are 1 hit from dying. So just zig zag around a monster that's almost dead, and when you think he has 1 more hit to go then you finish him off.
