If you got a Bionic, before you start installing apps, go to rootzwiki.com and learn how to upgrade your phone to the 901 update then install Eclipse 2.1 RC ROM.

the 901 update fixes the radio problems that plague the phone.

Handcent SMS (replaces regular messaging app for SMS/MMS)
Backup to Gmail (sends SMS, MMS and Call Log to your Gmail which makes it easily searchable and archivable, great app)
Thumb Keyboard (keyboard replacement, pretty much must have on a tablet/pad but still nice on a phone)
Beautiful Widgets (screen widgets and stuff, again I got it for my tablet but I do use it on my phone too)
2x Client (if you do remote stuff)
LogMeIn (even if just to put free on your home PC so you can access it from your phone)
