It makes more sense to publicly mourn Whitney Houston because she gave performances which emotionally touched many millions of people, and they felt like they knew and cared for her.
Now, is it dumb to get attached to celebrities? Often. Is the media over-blowing this for ratings? Of course. But Whitney Houston getting more coverage than a soldier still makes sense. It's about the emotional attachments people had.

the fact that you AREN'T told about those dead men and woman is whats so friggin wrong with this country.
You are inundated with Whitney Houston, whos greatest contribution was to sing some songs, and know nothing about the men and women who are fighting and dying abroad and frankly that should absolutely piss you off. But you won't... and thats what our leaders are counting on.

Do you personally go and read the biographies of each fallen soldier? I bet less than 1% of the people bitching about Whitney Houston do.
There is no ignoring of the casualties as you say, every time a soldier dies the story is covered, even if personal information isn't given out about each casualty.
There's no 'hoping' by the leaders that the casualties are ignored, at least in the Iraq War. Obama and previous presidents do what you say the media should be doing. They recognize and learn about the fallen soldiers. I doubt they'd give a rat's ass if biographies were given for the dead soldiers. It could even help the war, as people would realize how much most fallen soldiers enjoyed and loved serving in the military (well except for some of those who serve mainly to climb out of poverty).
Mourning isn't a competition. People mourn over Whitney Houston because they knew and cared about her. That doesn't mean all those people don't also care about US soldiers.
