I think you're underestimating what good scorers guys like J.R. and Melo are though.
Yeah they need to gel and get some chemistry and play like a team but on paper these guys are one of the most talented starting 5's in the NBA.

on paper.
Melo hasn't been the same player he was in Denever. Lin is a turnover machine, it's just being overlooked because the team is winning. And it's fairly obvious A'mare isn't as dominant as he was before Melo got to NY.
J.R. Smith can either shoot your team into a game, or shoot them out.
He reminds me a lot of Ben Gordon, but I haven't seen a ton of J.R. smith play.

They actually do need another perimeter threat...and it never hurts to have another guy who can take over a game.
Hey I'm a J.R. fan admittedly, I wanted him on the Bulls. I'm aware o his flaws but I'm also a fan of his talents.
