I see no response to my question. I can't help but think that many are probably too old, too young, in school, with disabilities to work. I rarely trust statistics because you can usually coax out the numbers you want to see.

I read somewhere that 21-ish% are retirees on social security. The "official" unemployment rate is currently 8.3% so those two added together are nearly 30% of "All Americans" (that number is really higher than 8.3%, incidentally).

But pointing out facts to people who buy into the argument linked in the OP is a huge waste of time and I would advise against it.

Conservatives love to hone in on the income tax number because it distorts the overall tax burden picture into the false theme that people on the bottom are freeloaders. The bottom 50% pay a higher percentage of their income into payroll, sales, and other taxes. When you look at total tax burden for all taxes (local, state, federal), as a percentage of income, things skew the other direction.

Too bad money isn't of linear value. Of course, who needs math when we can spout emotionally charged rhetoric and get our way!

You may not know it, but I and the rest of the world know you property taxes are passed on to your renters. If you occupy a space you will pay. It doesn't matter if you own it or not.

We need to stop kidding ourselves that Social Security is a retirement fund and is really social welfare for the elderly and combine it into the income tax.

That way, we take the cap off of contributions, the SS portion of the income tax can be lower, and the 49% who don't pay what is now "income tax" will show in the statistics as paying *something*.

It will allow everyone up and down the income scale to notice that they are paying income taxes and will give them incentive to hold the government more accountable for how it spends their money.

What Rho said.

Also, we shouldn't snicker whenever a politician says he/she wants to save the Social Security Trust fund.
