There's not even enough volts to light up the amp...

So anyway, is it a stiffening cap? If so, a half farad is rather small. Is it a 20 volt cap? And when your engine is running it should be 14.7V going in. But I digress.....a cap works like this (if for stiffening). It's nothing more than a storage devise to help supply power to the amp when there is a drain. The easiest way to understand it is to think of a toilet tank on top of a toilet. If you flushed without it you would not get enough sudden flow to empty the bowl. The pipes simply can't supply it fast enough. So the tank hold a charge for future use. Same with a stiffening cap. Even a battery can't keep up with the cycles on an amp under load.

So, if you're listening to music at a normal level and not bumping the cap does nothing. But once you start bumping it's supposed to supply the jolt then recharge for the next shot. Probably the best way to test it is to wait till night, turn on the lights, and put on some bass music. If your headlights dim when the bass hits it has failed or is maybe not large enough.

Well, the cap is not supposed to be inline (series) with the amp. You should wire the amp without the cap and try it. Then, just add the cap in parallel with the positive and negative to the amp if everything works.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes it's wired as series, as that's how the diagrams I found showed. I'll try it the other way and see how it works out

Touch both terminals to your tongue. You'll know if it has a charge soon.

Yes indeed....make your tongue a human resistor...it'll grow back.

I'm trying to wire a PID right now for a thermal immersion circuit. Can I PM you?
