Debt collector trying to collect a paid off debt.

Pioneer Credit Recovery says I owe the dept of treasury $2k I called dept of treasury no debt on record.
I did owe the treasury that money but it was paid in 2007.
after googling them seems like they are a scam company.
filed a complainant with the ftc.

This happens all the time. They sent your debt to collections... you probably paid the original person... and now your debt has been sold/bought so many times that it is disconnected from the original action.
Just ask them to verify the debt... and by federal law they have to show that you still owe it before they contact you.

In one I state I reside in debts have a statue of limitations and just go away after a certain number of years, iirc 7 years, so another thing these collection agencies will do is buy debts from other agencies and call the debtor and ask for the full amount, say $5k, then well we will negotiate for $3.5k, times goes on..... Let me speak to my manager..... How about $1,400. LOL.
They know the debt is expired and have no way to collect now but will still try to get anything out of you.

This is why I keep paperwork for everything. Pay something off? Keep the paperwork. Turn off utilities? Keep the final bill/paperwork. I keep all that stuff for about 10 years. Never know when something like this will happen. There have been a couple times where I needed those papers to prove a paid debt or a cancellation of something.

I would also suggest pulling your 3 free credit reports (from each place). More than likely you have been reported... it is really easy to dispute a debt with them though you just click a button I think.
Also would not worry about it... the ball is in their court. The credit report people will just take it down if they dont send proof.
