I was able to remove mine and leave it paused. They said in the article leaving it paused will continue to track new stuff by it will be anonymous and not linked to any of my accounts.

I don't normally stay logged into a google account outside of work
Aside from that, they know everything that I'm doing by IP address don't they? I don't think anything is truly private, but I expect it to stay anonymous.

Seems some accounts have the option and others do not... don't know why.
BTW, if you're concerned about this stuff; you might want to remove and pause your history (View & Search) on youtube.
Don't want someone to find out you had a crush on the Twilight Series after you've died
